3 National Team Members announced to Top 50 Player of the Year Watchlist
Three members of the Mexican Olympic Softball Team were named to the USA Softball NCAA collegiate Player of the Year watch list. These include Tatyana Forbes from North Carolina State University, Nicole Medes from the University of Oklahoma and Aaliyah Jordan from UCLA.
Nicole and Tatyana were part of the Team Mexico roster that qualified for the Olympic Games; the first time in Mexico softball history.
Fifty student-athletes were revealed on the watch list for the 2021 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award. This award enters its 19th season and recognizes outstanding athletic achievement by NCAA Division I female collegiate softball players across the United States.
Tatyana Forbes:
Tatyana is currently the NCAA Division I batting average leader with a career batting average of .463. She is also the first North Carolina State player in program history to be named to the Watch List, however, it marks the second time in Forbes' career she has been named to the list.
Forbes made a name for herself in the shortened 2020 season, ranking second nationally in hits (43), fifth in batting average (.538) and eighth in on-base percentage (.593). Forbes led the Atlantic Coast Conference in all three categories in addition to ranking fifth in the ACC in stolen bases per game. She also ranks eighth among all active players in stolen base percentage (.918). In 2020, she started all 25 games for the Wolfpack in right field where she recorded a 10-game hit streak and 17-game on-base streak, tied for the fifth-longest hit streak in program history. Forbes was also a top-10 finalist for the 2016 NFCA/Schutt Sports Division 1 National Freshman of the Year Award. Forbes was an integral part of the 2020 Wolfpack roster that had a red-hot start to the season, posting the best 15-game start in program history, opening ACC play 3-0 for the first time in five years, and finishing with a 19-6 record.
Nicole Mendes:
Nicole Mendes makes her first appearance on the top 50 players watch list. As an outfielder and two-time WCWS All-Tournament Team member Nicole for her fifth season with the Sooners in 2021 and looks to bounce back from a season that saw her play just six games following knee surgery in 2019. The only current Sooner that played on OU's last national title team in 2017, Mendes went 3-for-6 at the plate with two home runs and five RBIs in her limited appearances in 2020.
Nicole’s many honors include: Named to 2017 and 2019 WCWS All-Tournament Team, 2017 All-Region First Team selection, 2018 Third Team pick, 2017 All-Big 12 First Team honoree, Named to 2017 Big 12 Championship All-Tournament Team, 2017 Big 12 Freshman of the Year and an All-Big 12 Freshman Team selection.
Nicole finished the 2019 season tied for third in OU career history with 12 triples. During the 2019 season, she played in 60 games, tallied 13 games with multiple hits and 10 games with multiple RBIs. She reached base in 22 straight games from Feb. 24-April 5, recorded a .306 batting average during the postseason and a .316 average in the WCWS, both ranking second on the team. She also strung together a season-long five game hitting streak during Super Regionals and the WCWS, drove in the game-winning run with an RBI triple in OU’s WCWS opener vs. Alabama and went 2-for-3 in OU’s season finale vs. UCLA.
In the 2018 season she appeared in 60 games, led the team with five triples, ranking 24th nationally and tying for ninth-most in a single season in school history. She led the team with a .714 batting average (5-for-7) at the NCAA Norman Super Regional and totaled 14 multiple-hit games .
Aaliyah Jordan:
During the shortened 2020 season, Aaliyah finished with a .482 batting average in 20 games played with 27 hits, doubles 11, 2 homeruns and 25 RBI's. During the 2019 season Aaliyah earned a spot on the NFCA All-West Region Second Team and All-Pac-12 First Team honors, leading the Bruins with 20 doubles, ranking second with 13 home runs, 61 runs batted in, a .711 slugging percentage and a .467 on base percentage. She tied for second with 28 walks and tied for third with a .383 batting average, adding 42 runs scored. In addition, she tied for 10th nationally in doubles, tied for 16th in RBIs and tied for 35th in total bases (128). Among Pac-12 players she was first in doubles, tied for fourth in RBIs, sixth in on base percentage, tied for sixth in total bases, eighth in slugging and hits (69) and ninth in batting average and homers. She was second on the team with 16 multiple-RBI games and third with 18 multi-hits.
In 2018 she was a First Team NFCA All-American, First Team NFCA All-Region, Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, Pac-12 Batting Champion, All-Pac-12 First Team, Pac-12 All-Freshman Team and a Top 10 finalist for the NFCA FOY and USA Softball Player of the Year awards. She was a six-time Pac-12 Freshman of the Week (Feb. 20 and 27, March 13, April 2, 23 and 30), as well as Pac-12 Player of the Week on April 23 and led the team with a .429 batting average, 12 home runs, 67 runs batted in, 84 hits, 15 doubles, 141 total bases, a .719 slugging, a .491 on base percentage and 27 walks.
